Hermes

Hermes, or the ultimate luxury in the world of fine leather goods…

Everything started in 1837 in Paris, France, when Thierry Hermes started to make saddles, harnesses and other equestrian goods out of fine leather. By the end of this century, Hermes started very quickly to create handbags, luggage and trunks, as the use of horses was about to be replaced by motorized vehicles.

By 1930, the worldwide famous Kelly first appeared, but it’s only in 1956 that it became a super star. The Kelly bag was so named after Princess Grace of Monaco, former American actress Grace Kelly, while she tried to cover her pregnant stomach from the paparazzi. What she didn’t know at that time, is that she named a bag that would become a cult in the history of handbags.

In 1981, Jean-Louis Dumas was sitting in an airplane next to British-born actress-singer Jane Birkin, who complained about her overstuffed purse. Three years later, he introduced a bag based on an 1892 design, made based on the bohemian lifestyle of Jane Birkin, and simply named Birkin.

These two bags are the most famous of the brand. And, as a matter of fact, they are also two of the most complex handbags in the world, and they are made 100 % by hand. This is also what makes this brand so exceptional ! The leather colors are custom-made, and each color has a unique line of undertones. You can also choose a “Rigide” version for your bag, which would have stitching on the outside, or a “Souple” version, which would have a softer feel and inside stitching.

The quality of the leather, and the uniqueness of the creation of an Hermes bag is not all. The choice of the hardware for these bags are stunning : 24 karat gold, silver palladium, ruthenium or guilloche are the choices for the metal that will adorn your bag.

And finally, if you want one of these beauties, you will be on a long waiting list, despite the price we won’t even talk about…
